Forming part of the Neotropical zone, Costa Rica is considered one of the 20 most biologically diverse countries in the world. Although it covers just 0.03% of the Earth’s surface, 4% of the entire world’s biological wealth is contained within the small country of Costa Rica. As part of the tropical belt encircling the Earth, Costa Rica receives high levels of both solar radiation and humidity, two of the most important elements in maintaining a wide variety of species making it a naturalist’s paradise. The close proximity of two oceans (Atlantic and Pacific) and the presence of volcanic mountains that dominate the interior, make Costa Rica a patchwork of varied and interesting micro-climates and natural environments for all naturalists and eco-tourists to enjoy.
